THIS IS A CHARITY SINGLE, PAY AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU WANT. HERE'S THE CAUSE:

malawi is a country in eastern africa with one of the lowest GBPs in the world. imagine yourself as a musician there, trying to release a record. we know it’s not easy even in a moderately well-off country such as poland, but we do not pretend to really imagine the impossibility of a situation in which you can barely survive from day to day and still want to bring your music to the world.

tonga boys – an outfit that creates music that is incredibly moving, original, and (especially to a european ear) intricately constructed, using a drum, a makeshift guitar and some household objects + voices. as an entity that puts artistic expression regardless of limitations above everything else, we in newspaperflyhunting wish to contribute to the efforts of the musician-ethnologist piotr cichocki (1000hz, owls are not), our friend and sometime collaborator, focused on recording and releasing truly amazing malawian artist to the general public. for this reason, all profit from the sale of this single will be donated to piotr to finance his studies/recording efforts focused on african/malawian music, including tonga boys and kukaya.

listening to tonga boys’ tunes, i feel humbled and surprised by how much you can achieve with limited resources and how powerful music can be, across differing musical cultures and modes. i also realize that their philosophy is surprisingly close to ours, i.e. music is an inner force that cannot be dammed, and this need for self-expression is both the ultimate aim and the only aspect of any artistic endeavour that matters in the end.
